GE Oven Not Heating in West Hollywood — What I Found

A short case study from a recent GE oven call in West Hollywood. The client had a built-in GE wall oven that would not heat for bake, but broil worked normally. The cause turned out to be the most common GE wall oven failure pattern. Here is what I checked.

Problem

The client had a GE built-in wall oven, about 10 years old, in a Beverly Grove condo. She tried to bake a casserole the night before and noticed the oven never got hot. The display said 350°F but the food never cooked. She tried broil to test and it worked — the broil element at the top glowed red and made heat right away.

Diagnosis

I asked her the most useful question for this symptom: does broil work but bake does not? She said yes. That is a very specific pattern, and it almost always points to one of three things on a GE electric oven: a failed bake element, a control board relay, or a wiring issue at the element terminals.

I removed the bake element cover at the bottom of the oven. The element looked normal at first glance — no visible break, no burn marks. But when I tested continuity with a meter, the reading was way off. The element was electrically dead, even though it looked fine.

This happens more often than people expect. An electric bake element can fail without any visible damage. The internal wire inside the element has broken in a way you cannot see from outside.

I also checked the wiring connectors at the back of the element. They looked fine, no burn marks or corrosion. The control board relay tested good too. The failure was just the element itself.

Cause

Failed bake element. No external sign of damage, but the internal heating wire had broken. Broil worked because broil uses a separate element at the top.

Repair

I had a replacement element on the truck (it is a common part for GE wall ovens). The repair took about 30 minutes — removing the old element, transferring the wires to the new element, securing it, and reinstalling the cover.

I also showed the client the dead element next to the new one. They looked identical from outside, which is why some clients try to "see" a failed element and decide it must be the control. Looking is not a real test.

Result

After installing the new element, I set the oven to 350°F bake and waited. The new element glowed bright red. Within 12 minutes the oven preheated to temperature and held it correctly. I confirmed both bake and broil were working before leaving.

Tip

If your GE electric oven will not bake but broil works fine, the most likely cause is a failed bake element, even if it looks normal. A real test with a meter takes 30 seconds and tells you for sure.
